The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) is a non-profit
organization promoting the safety of motorcyclists with programs in rider
training, operator licensing, and public information. The MSF Rider Course is
based on years of scientific research and field experience. The current
curriculum has been field-tested and has proven to be successful in developing
the entry-level skills for riding in traffic. In its various iterations, over
two million riders have been trained since 1973.
The NEA Rider Course follows the MSF Rider Course curriculum. Currently we are trying to flush a backlog of riders who wish to take the Basic Rider Course (BRC) serving those who have just purchased a bike or who want to buy one soon. Later we will add opportunities to take the Experienced Rider Course (ERC).
The BRC covers the basic fundamentals for a novice rider
to develop capabilities to become a safe responsible motorcyclist.
It provides the opportunity to learn the physical and mental skills
important to operate a motorcycle. In the classroom, you will learn ways to
minimize risk and handle special riding situations. During the riding portions
of the BRC you will be coached to develop the physical skills of basic control
that will include: clutch control, straight line riding, stopping, shifting, and
turning, then move on to more advanced skills such as: stopping quickly,
cornering, lane changing, and swerving.
Currently the BRC has been scheduled as follows:
classroom portion is for ten students on Friday nights from 6:00 pm till 10:00
pm., riding portion is for eight students on Saturday and eight students on Sunday
from 8:00 am till 7:00 pm. We currently have eight trainer bikes so this limits
the number of students in the riding portion. The cost of the course is $150 per
student.
During all riding portions of the course students are
required to wear DOT helmets, full fingered gloves, long pants, long sleeved
shirts or jackets, eye protection, and over the ankle shoes or boots.
To successfully complete the course students must: 1) attend all sessions, 2) achieve a minimum score on a knowledge test covering course material, and 3) achieve a minimum score on the practical riding-skill evaluation.
